Palais Brut is a recycled prefab house, equipped with new windows, underfloor heating and water heating through solar thermal energy.
It aspires to set an example of sensible renovation for an unpopular building. The demolition of such a structure made of reinforced concrete in favour of a new construction is no longer contemporary in times of finite resources.
The interior of the apartments combines refurbished old furniture found in Berlin cellars with lamps and other objects from Rotor Deconstruction, a cooperative that organises the reuse of building materials.

The outside walls have been insulated from the inside using calcium silicate boards to maintain the minimalist design of Plattenbau- architecture and the typical look of the facade with exposed aggregate concrete.
The insulation of the cellar and the foundation of the garden sauna were done with glass foam gravel, a by-product of glass production that, in addition to excellent insulation values, is also environmentally friendly. Thanks to Viowall, a development of the Munich company Viol Glass, we were able to place and stack the glass foam gravel directly on the cellar walls.
